Satellite Internet?
« on: October 08, 2011, 01:58:36 PM »
Okay geeks, we are looking for a satellite internet system that would allow the search team to access the internet anywhere.

Can we get one of these to get us portable internet anywhere? Anyone know any techs at Dish network?

Looks like we would need the "tailgater", a receiver, and some sort of package.  The antenna and receiver would be about $500 which is cheap compared to a satellite phone and Dish has some cheaper internet packages and it looks like you can purchase them a month at a time.... the only missing piece is if the "tailgater" will work with an internet only package...

 Thoughts?  Ideas?

It looks to me that the Tailgater is for television. I think what you're looking for is a BGAN type device. A new satellite is being launched in a few days which will increase the speed of satellite internet but it appears that the price point is staying the same (high). Unless Bill Gates joins our team we'll probably not have one of these - http://www.groundcontrol.com/BGAN.htm

Info on the new satellite-

Here's another one:

(looks like the cost is $50 - $109 a month + equipment costs)

Viasat is about to start their new satellite based residential service with much better bandwidth. I do not know if there will be a portable solution offered but hopefully so. It would be great PR for the company to donate some connections to poor SAR teams  ;)

This sounds promising: "satellite broadband that's comparable to DSL speeds and prices."

I've read the speeds are great, but the latency is still really high (over 1/2 second)

Happy to report, Mission Manager works very well with a Satellite Connection  ;D.  I'm currently running some tests (and typing this message) over a Cobham .96 M Dish 1MB down 1/2MB up.  I'm sharing this with several other users all on the same connection.  Seeing a little latency sometimes, but not much at all.  I'm pretty impressed with the speed.

Latency would only really affect some types of usage, namely gaming and some streaming.  Overall it seems to be a solution worth looking in to.
